U.S. House – 2nd District

Peter Crosby, 41

1) What challenges are most pressing for Utahns under 36, and how can you realistically respond within your office?

Affordability, in housing, healthcare, and general cost of living. As a member of Congress, I can roll back illegal tariffs which are costing us over $200 billion so far, restrict corporate ownership of residential property, and restore ACA subsidies while we work to create an effective single payer system for healthcare. Depending on the administration, we can also look at revised student loan costs, and get rid of the payroll tax cap for social security to secure retirement for everyone under the age of 60. There is also a significant environmental issue with the Great Salt Lake that requires federal involvement if the state of Utah can't sort it out.

2) As an elected official, how do you plan to respond to growing authoritarianism, corruption, and assaults on civil rights?

First, ban individual stock trades for members of Congress and their immediate families. Removing corruption starts at home, and this is a simple and straightforward start. Second, encourage active Congressional action using oversight committees, enforced subpoenas, and perhaps most importantly, budget restrictions and the power of impeachment to bring the executive back in line with the rule of law. I also advocate for expanded voting protections for all Americans (e.g., killing the SAVE Act), increased protections for other rights (e.g., Roe v. Wade should be restored), and increased Congressional and Judicial limitations (e.g., term limits for Congress and the Judiciary, and an enforceable code of ethics).

3) In a race with multiple candidates asking to represent the Democratic Party, what should make you stand out to Young Democrats?

I am the candidate best positioned through experience, life circumstances, and personal investment to both successfully fight for the issues impacting Young Democrats, and understand why that fight is so important. I have three daughters, with the eldest graduating from high school this year, and all three of them are entering into a world that has fewer opportunities and protections than the one their mother or grandmother came into as adults. I have been a working professional for almost twenty years, and still have student loan payments. I own a home, but only because we were lucky enough to buy in 2016 before the market completely exploded. I think you will find the other candidates and I share a lot of similar policy perspectives, but I know I am the individual best positioned to win an election against Blake Moore.
